11th Ward Beanbag Tournament Winners
The 11th Ward sponsored the annual Beanbag Tournament at McGuane Park, located at 2901 S. Poplar Ave. Cook County Commissioner John P. Daley and Alderman James A. Balcer, along with Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner Patrick Daley Thompson are pleased to announce the winners of the tournament: 1st Place – Rich Martino and Cecilia Jimenez; 2nd Place – Cheryl Kramer and Kierra Wilborn.
“We are grateful to the parents and coaches who assisted the children during the tournament. In addition, we thank the Chicago Park District staff for their efforts and cooperation,” said Commissioner Daley. “We are honored to sponsor these athletic tournaments to the schools, parks, and residents of the 11th Ward, and are grateful for their participation,” added Alderman Balcer. “Congratulations to the winners and the participants of this tournament and a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to the parents, family, and friends for their time and dedication,” said Commissioner Thompson.

Canaryville Little League Opening Day
Cook County Commissioner John P. Daley and Alderman James A. Balcer gathered with residents, the Canaryville Little League, the players, families and friends to celebrate the opening day festivities. “Alderman Balcer and I wish the Canaryville Little League, the players, families and friends, much success and a great 2013 baseball season,” said Commissioner Daley. “We are pleased to see such a great turnout in support of this promising organization. Good luck to all!” added Alderman Balcer. Before marching in the parade, Commissioner Daley and Alderman Balcer met with the Canaryville Veterans Association. “The Canaryville Veterans Association is a great organization, and one of the reasons why Canaryville is such a strong community,” said Commissioner Daley. “We are grateful for this organization, along with many others, whom serve as a pillar to the 11th Ward,” added Alderman Balcer.

MBBL Opening Day
Cook County Commissioner John P. Daley and Alderman James A. Balcer visited McGuane Park to partake in the McGuane Bridgeport Baseball League Opening Day festivities, and to wish them much success for the 2013 season. “Alderman Balcer and I wish the MBBL organization, the players, their families and fans all the best on this upcoming baseball season,” said Commissioner Daley. “We applaud the MBBL, along with other organizations like this, for their efforts, time, and dedication in providing a safe outlet for the kids to stay off the street and have fun at the same time,” added Alderman Balcer.

11th Ward Boy & Girl of the Year Award Ceremony
Cook County Commissioner John P. Daley and Alderman James A. Balcer, along with Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner Patrick D. Thompson, are pleased to announce the winners of the 11th Ward Boy & Girl of the Year Program. The 8th grade Boy and Girl of the Year Program award winners are: Shijia Hu from Robert Healy School, and Ashley O’Donnell from Santa Lucia. The 8th grade Boy and Girl of the Year Program award runner-ups are: Charlie Pasciak from Santa Lucia, and Emily Ecklund from St. Jerome. The 7th grade Boy and Girl of the Year Program award winners are: Nikolas Anaya from Bridgeport Catholic Academy, and Valerie Corral from Bridgeport Catholic Academy. The 7th grade Boy and Girl of the Year Program award runner-ups are: Zachary Pasciak from Santa Lucia, and Ugomma Ugwu-Uche from Santa Lucia.
Each applicant was judged based on their participation and leadership in school, civic, and volunteer activities. Two letters of recommendations and a copy of their current report card were required at the time of application. “Alderman Balcer and I would like to thank all the judges who took on the difficult task of judging these bright and talented individuals who participated in this contest,” said Commissioner Daley. “All the participants deserve praise and recognition for the hard work they put into school and extracurricular activities. Their families should be very proud of them for showcasing their talents,” added Alderman Balcer. “These outstanding individuals are a reflection of our bright future, and we wish them continued success,” said Commissioner Thompson.

11th Ward Spelling Bee Winners
The 11th Ward sponsored the annual Spelling Bee for 5th grade students at Armour Park, located at 3309 S. Shields Ave. Each participant was given a list of 100 words, twenty-five of those words were chosen as the contest words. An additional 10 unfamiliar words were given in case of a tie.

11th Ward Olympic Day Winners
Cook County Commissioner John P. Daley, Alderman James A. Balcer, and Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner Patrick D. Thompson sponsored the annual 11th Ward Olympic Day event at McGuane Park for 1st thru 3rd graders from area schools. Each team consisted of three participants, whom competed in the basketball hotshot, football passing accuracy, obstacle course, and relay race.
“Alderman Balcer, Commissioner Thompson, and I are impressed with the abilities and teamwork these children displayed at such a young age” said Commissioner Daley. “We would like to thank the parents, teachers, coaches, and the Chicago Park District staff for their hard work” added Alderman Balcer. “The participants’ excitement and enthusiasm is a reminder that physical fitness is important and fun,” said Commissioner Thompson.

11th Ward Art Contest Winners
Cook County Commissioner John P. Daley and Alderman James A. Balcer sponsored the 11th Ward Art Contest. The theme for this year’s contest was “Family”, and the contest was made available to all grade school children, ranging from Pre-K through 8th Grade. “We would like to thank all the schools and especially the students who participated in the contest. The entries were creative, unique, and took much time and effort,” said Commissioner Daley. “Once again the student’s talents do not go unnoticed. We would like to commend the families for their support of the children,” added Alderman Balcer.

11th Ward Sponsors Swim Meet
The 11th Ward sponsored the annual swim meet for boys and girls from ages 8-14 on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at McGuane Park, located at 2901 S. Poplar Ave. Contestants swam a 25 yard free-style race according to their appropriate age and sex. Over ninety participants from Armour Park, McGuane Park, Wilson C.C., and the Valentine Boys & Girls Club competed. Commissioner John P. Daley and Alderman James A. Balcer are pleased to announce the winning teams for the swim meet: 1st Place – Valentine A, 2nd Place – McGuane A, and 3rd Place – Valentine B. “Alderman Balcer and I would like to congratulate all the swimmers that participated in the annual 11th ward swim meet. The swimmers came out and really gave it their all!” said Commissioner Daley. “Commissioner Daley and I are grateful to the parents and coaches who assisted the children during the tournament. In addition, we thank the Chicago Park District staff for their efforts and cooperation. We are honored to sponsor these sporting events along with academic events that we host year round,” added Alderman Balcer.

Cook County Commissioner John P. Daley and Alderman James A. Balcer would like to thank all the participants for their entries into this year’s 11th Ward T-shirt Design Contest. 11th Ward Spelling Bee Winners
The 11th Ward sponsored the annual Spelling Bee for 5th grade students at Armour Park, located at 3309 S. Shields Ave. Each participant was given a list of 100 words, twenty-five of those words were chosen as the contest words. An additional 10 unfamiliar words were given in case of a tie.

11th Ward sponsors Grammar School Basketball Tournament
The 11th Ward sponsored the annual Grammar School Basketball Tournament for grades 5th through 8th at McGuane Park, located at 2901 S. Poplar Ave. Cook County Commissioner John P. Daley and Alderman James A. Balcer are pleased to announce the following winners from the junior varsity and varsity division.
Junior Varsity : 1st Place – Santa Lucia Lightning, 2nd Place – B.C.A. 5th & 6th, 3rd Place – St. Jerome Lions, 4th Place – Armour. Frankie Ramundo of the Santa Lucia Lightning was named the Most Valuable Player of the junior varsity division.
Varsity : 1st Place – St. Jerome Lions, 2nd Place – B.C.A. 7th & 8th, 3rd Place – St. Barbara Bulldogs. Joseph Kish of the St. Jerome Lions was named the Most Valuable Player of the varsity division.
